Horse riding in the Agafay desert
Along the canyon edge, at a walk and a trot. Honest caveat first: it suits people who have ridden before better than complete beginners.
What it is
The route follows the canyon edge, on uneven ground, at a walk with stretches of trot. A guide rides with you. It is the quietest of the activities on the plateau: no engine, no dust, and the horses make less noise than the camels.
We say this before you book rather than after: an hour in the saddle is longer than it sounds if you have never done it, and the ground here is not a riding school. If you have ridden before, it is the best way to see the plateau. If you have not, the camel does the same landscape with none of the effort.

When to go
Early morning. The light is good, the horses are fresh, and the temperature is not yet a factor. Late afternoon works in winter, but in summer the ground holds the heat well past sunset.
