How to get from Marrakech to the Agafay Desert
Thirty kilometres, forty to sixty minutes, and one stretch of piste at the end that decides how the journey feels. Here are the options, honestly compared.
Agafay is about 30 kilometres south-west of Marrakech, and the drive takes 40 to 60 minutes. Almost all of that variation happens on the Marrakech side: getting out of the city takes longer than the open road that follows.
The route runs through Lalla Takerkoust and is surfaced nearly the whole way. The final approach to most camps is a piste, and that last few kilometres is the part that decides whether the journey was pleasant.

Why the last few kilometres matter
The piste to the camps is not difficult. It is gravel and washboard, perfectly manageable in an ordinary car driven slowly, and genuinely unpleasant if you go fast or if the suspension is tired.
This is why people who took a shared minibus tend to remember the transfer more than the desert, and why a vehicle with ground clearance makes a difference that has nothing to do with off-road capability. Nobody needs an expedition truck to reach Agafay. A car that absorbs corrugations is another matter.

Getting picked up in the medina
If your riad is deep in the medina, no car reaches the door. This is normal and it is not a problem: the driver meets you at the nearest vehicle-accessible point and walks you the last few minutes.
What helps is giving the riad name when you book rather than the street address. Riads are known by name locally; street numbers in the medina are frequently not.
Coming straight from the airport
Marrakech Menara airport is on the south-west side of the city, which happens to be the Agafay side. A transfer from the airport to the plateau avoids the centre entirely and is usually quicker than from a riad in the medina.
It also works in reverse: leaving the camp in the morning and going straight to a flight, with the luggage in the boot, saves a return to Marrakech that serves no purpose.

For a Night Pass or a dinner, work backwards from sunset rather than from the camp’s opening hours. The hour before dark is the reason to be there, and arriving after it means missing the point of the evening.
What a transfer should include
- A return journey, not just the outbound leg
- A return to the address of your choice, which need not be where you were collected
- Waiting time on the plateau if you are there for a pass, a dinner or an activity
- Fuel, tolls and parking
- A driver who knows the camps, which counts: they are unsigned and the pistes look identical after dark
Ask whether the price is per journey or per person. A quote per vehicle is what you want, and it changes the maths entirely for a family of four.
Who a private transfer actually suits
- Couples on a Night Pass: you leave when the light is right rather than when the minibus is full
- Families: car seats, luggage and a driver who waits rather than a fixed return time
- Small groups: one vehicle costs less per head than four seats on a shared run
- Anyone staying overnight: the driver leaves and comes back the next day at your hour
It suits solo travellers less well on price, and a shared run is a reasonable choice if you are on your own and flexible about timing.
Driving yourself
Entirely possible. The road is straightforward, the turning is findable with a pin dropped in advance, and the piste is manageable if you take it at walking pace.
Two cautions. Download the route offline: mobile coverage on the plateau is patchy and the last turnings are not obvious. And do not attempt the final approach for the first time after dark, which is when the pistes stop being distinguishable from one another.
What it costs
We quote per journey rather than publish a figure, because the price depends on where you are staying, the time of day and how long the driver waits. Send us the address and the date and you have a price the same day.
Payment is in cash on the day, to the driver. Nothing is taken when you book and no card details are needed. Bring the amount with you: there is no cash point on the plateau.

Yes. Where no car can reach the door, the driver meets you at the nearest accessible point and walks you to the vehicle. Give the riad name rather than the street address.
Can the driver wait while we are at the camp?
Yes. Say roughly how long you expect to stay and the waiting time is included in the quote.
Can we go straight to the airport afterwards?
Yes, and it often saves time. Menara airport is on the Agafay side of the city, so the return avoids the centre.
Is a transfer to Agafay priced per person or per vehicle?
